Community-based waste collection, sorting-for-transfer and landfill diversion
How our service works
Households separate their waste into three bins: recyclable, organic and general waste. Waste is collected by local waste pickers, sorted at controlled waste facilities, and recyclable materials are separated for recovery. Operational data is tracked to support accountability and service improvement.
Our approach is designed around practical local conditions, including narrow roads and paths that are better served by trolleys than large vehicles.
In a nutshell: Working with local waste pickers, we provide weekly door-to-door household waste collection, support separation-at-source, sort recyclable materials at local mini-waste sorting facilities, and coordinate responsible disposal of non-recyclable waste.
Our beginning
In late 2023, Nova Institute established a community-based waste collection and recycling service in the Smashblock community as part of a local industry's air quality offset programme. By reducing waste burning and illegal dumping, the service improved air quality while creating cleaner neighbourhoods and creating local employment opportunities.
Transition to NPC
In 2025, the team embarked on an incubation journey to establish Green Futures Smashblock as an independent non-profit company. Together, we developed a new organisational identity, governance structures and operating systems, with guidance and support from Nova Institute, before becoming independent in mid-2026.

Today, Green Futures Smashblock proudly serves the Smashblock community as an independent, locally managed non-profit organisation. We remain committed to delivering a reliable waste service while building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future.
